Maps

There are a lot of excellent maps about Austria available on the market. Those maps are available at the local stores and tourist offices.

The maps we use are from Freytag & Berndt (F&B). These maps, scale 1:50.000, have detailed geographic information (mountain names, heights, contour lines etc.) as well as detailed information about the roads, paths (marked and unmarked), climbs, alpine huts etc.

There are also good maps (also 1:50.000) from Kompass. They have an extra guide with information about the region (villages, valleys, culture etc.) and short tour descriptions.

Vorarlberg
  • There are three maps worth buying if you want to go to Vorarlberg:
  • F&B > Bregenzer Wald. Map number: WK 364
  • F&B > Bludenz - Klostertal - Montafon. Map nr: WK 371
  • F&B > Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse - Piz Buin. Map nr: WK 373
  • Kompass > Bregenzer Wald - Westallgäu. Map number K2
  • Kompass > Silvretta - Verwallgrupper. Map number K41
  • Kompass > Bludenz - Schruns - Klostertal. Map number K32
Salzburgerland

There are two maps worth buying if you want to go to the Salzburgerland region, and then especially the Pinzgau region:

  • GrossVenediger, Oberpinzgau. Map number: WK 121
  • GrossGlockner, Kaprun, Sell am See. Map nr: WK 122
Ost-Tirol

There are two maps worth buying if you want to go to the Ost-Tirol region and maybe visit nearby Italy:

  • Lienzer Dolomiten - Lesachtal. Map number: WK 182
  • Sextener Dolomiten - Coritna D'Amprezzo. WK S10

Guides

We also use tour guides called "Rother Wanderführer" written by various authors. There are several guides of each region in Austria. Every guide describes many (35 to 80) tours from an easy Sunday afternoon walk to pretty difficult climbs on high mountains. The tour descriptions are built up almost the same way like my tour descriptions (actually I adapted their method ;). Those guides are written only in the German language and also use parts of maps by Freytag & Berndt.

Vorarlberg guides that can be useful are:
  • Grosses Walsertal (45 tours)
  • Montafon (50 tours)
  • Bodensee bis zum Brandnertal (80 tours)
  • Vorarlberg (35 tours, 15 biking routes)
Salzburgerland guides that can be useful are:
  • Hohe Tauern - Nationalpark Nord (50 tours)
Ost-Tirol and Dolomites (Austria / Italy) guides that can be useful are:
  • Ost-Tirol Süd - Lienz,Drautal, Villgraten, Lesachtal (50 tours)
  • Dolomiten 5 - Sexten, Toblach, Prags (50 tours)
There are a lot of those "Rother Wanderführer" guides, not only for Vorarlberg or Salzburgerland, but also for the regions Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany), Mont Blanc, Allgäu, Tirol, Vienna and many more.
