There are a lot of excellent maps about Austria available on the market. Those maps are available at the local stores and tourist offices.
The maps we use are from Freytag & Berndt (F&B). These maps, scale 1:50.000, have detailed geographic information (mountain names, heights, contour lines etc.) as well as detailed information about the roads, paths (marked and unmarked), climbs, alpine huts etc.
There are also good maps (also 1:50.000) from Kompass. They have an extra guide with information about the region (villages, valleys, culture etc.) and short tour descriptions.
There are two maps worth buying if you want to go to the Salzburgerland region, and then especially the Pinzgau region:
There are two maps worth buying if you want to go to the Ost-Tirol region and maybe visit nearby Italy:
We also use tour guides called "Rother Wanderführer" written by various authors. There are several guides of each region in Austria. Every guide describes many (35 to 80) tours from an easy Sunday afternoon walk to pretty difficult climbs on high mountains. The tour descriptions are built up almost the same way like my tour descriptions (actually I adapted their method ;). Those guides are written only in the German language and also use parts of maps by Freytag & Berndt.
