Travel Report 1995: Brand, Vorarlberg (Austria)

Day 1: Su 02/07

Our 6th time in a row in Vorarlberg! Departure at 07:20h from Maastricht and we arrived at 15:00h sharp in Brand. We only had one traffic jam nearby Ulm - Memmingen which cost us 30 minutes. Ah well, no big deal. In the evening we had a nice meal at Grill Tenne. Weather was quite nice, but in the morning we had some rain.

Day 2: Mo 03/07

First we went shopping at InterSpar in Bürs for some groceries, just like every year :) Weather was pretty chilly with a maximum of only 15 degrees Celcius.

Day 3: Tu 04/07

Our first tour day. As some kind of tradition we walked the roundtrip Brand - Niggenkopf - Parpfienz Alpe - Brand. But this time with a short walk towards the Palüdhütte from the Niggenkopf. Again cool weather, but perfect for this hike.

Day 4: Wed 05/07

Another tour day today! We decided to go to Lünersee. Normally in the end of July, begin August there's no snow left around Lünersee, but because the winter of '94-'95 was quite heavy and we were there in the beginning of July, there was plenty of snow left! So even an easy walk around the lake was a nice adventure, hahaha ;) Anyway, have a look at the photographs, so you can see what I mean. Weather: again cold and cloudy, but that didn't bother us at all.

Day 5: Th 06/07

After two tour days we stayed in. Went to the InterSpar again for some groceries. Luckily the weather changed, sunny and about 27 degrees celsius. Later that day we had company: some friends visited us ;)

Day 6: Fr 07/07

Somewhere in the Montafon valley, hidden in the woods, there's a nice 'schlucht' (ravine) called Garneraschlucht also known as the Fengatobel. We made a nice roundtrip via Ganeu - Lifinar - Rehsee back to Gaschurn where we parked our car.

Day 7: Sa 08/07

This day my father and I made a tour in the Bregenzer Wald region, to be more precise: up to the summit of Zafernhorn (2107m). It was fabulous day with nice weather and a great tour. See for yourself, have a look at the photographs!

Day 8: Su 09/07

Hot weather (up to 35 degrees celsius (!)) only suitable for doing nothing ... and that's what we did :) In the evening we enjoyed a great meal at Ghf Am Kreuz in Rankweil.

Day 9: Mo 10/07

Today we climbed one of the summits of the Walserkamm (Grosses Walsertal): Löffelspitz (1962m). About the route ? Well, nearby the summit it actually was a pretty steep climb, but overall a nice hike over alps. Superb view from the summit: all well known summits were visible, like Rote Wand, Zitter Klapfen en het Rätikon. We also had some company ...

Day 10: Tu 11/07

Went to the InterSpar again for some groceries. Stayed in the rest of the day.

Day 11: Wed, 12/07

Today we went up a little higher in altitude ... to about 2400m: Zamangspitze (2385m.) at the Hochjoch region in Montafon. We took the cable railway up towards Kapell Alpe and started the tour there. First up towards Sennigrat (2289m) and the Wormser Hütte (2305m.). From here a short rocky climb to Kreuzjoch (2351m.) where a descent followed. The final climb to the summit of Zamangspitze was a quite nice rocky climb and not too difficult.
Our way down on the Wormser Seeweg (other route back towards Kapell Alpe from Wormser Hütte) was somewhat more difficult because there was snow, snow and snow again :) But it was a lot of fun! Weather was nice, but chilly at 2000m.

Day 12: Th 13/07

Hot sunny weather. Stayed at the cottage all day.

Day 13: Fr 14/07

This day we climbed another summit of the Walserkamm: Hochgerach (1985m). With the Schnifiser Bergbahn (an -old- cable railway, can you imagine ? ;) we went up towards Hensler (1340m.) where we started this tour. First towards the Garach Hütte and the huge television tranceiver tower and then the climb towards the summit of Hochgerach. From here went went down on a somewhat 'alternative' route ;) Nice weather, lots of sunshine. Superb tour!

Day 14: Sa 15/07

Pretty tired from the previous day ;) , we decided to stay in. Weather was not too bad and it was not too warm (about 22 degrees celsius).

Day 15: Su 16/07

Our first rainy day! Temperature was also quite low, about 16 degrees celsius. But, we had a nice diner at Ghf Am Kreuz in Rankweil.

Day 16: Mo 17/07

We planned a hike towards the Mörzelspitze (1830m.) in the Bregenzer Wald region, but because of the rain the previous day all paths were a total mess! So we decided, because we were in the neighbourhood anyway, to visit the Rappenlochschlucht and Alplochschlucht which are both very spectacular ravines! In the end a nice day after all :)

Day 17: Tu 18/07

Another day to relax. Nice weather, not too warm.

Day 18: Wed 19/08

Again a little higher in altitude this day: up towards the Grüne Kuppe (2579m.) in the Silvretta region. Like the other days, there was a lot of snow left at these heights. We parked our car at Bielerhöhe (2026m.) and walked on the left side of the Silvretta lake towards Wiesbadener Hütte (2443m.). Of course we took the 'sommerweg' (=summer path) which led us away from the crowds. At the Wiesbadner Hütte we climbed towards Grünne Kuppe via the Vermunt Glacier (small glacier passage here). Not too difficult, but because of the snow a little exhausting. Pretty long tour (6 hours).

Day 19: Tu 20/07

Our last tour this year and what a great one: Drei Schwestern (2053m) in the Feldkirch region. A superb climb with staircases, iron steps, steel ropes, small ridges and a beautiful view from the summit. From Fraztanz - Amerlügen we started this pretty long tour (6½ hours). First towards the Feldkircher Hütte. Then upwards to Saroja Sattel (1628m.) and the summit of Drei Schwestern. Weather: very hot, especially at the alps it was exhausting.
